Everyone is talking about machine learning, but what is it? Why is it needed? And how will it improve your organization?

Machine-Learning event

Your organization collects data – sales data, customer data, and competitor data. Machine learning unlocks this goldmine of information, providing you with a way to make informed decisions, faster than ever before.

Predictive analytics give you the ability to deploy your data by making quick, automated decisions. This elevates performance and gives your organization the competitive edge needed in a dynamic and aggressive market.

Machine learning is how an organization can peak into the future. It gives you the ability to quickly react to market conditions, increase your revenue, and beat your competition to market. You want to employ it, but how do you learn more about it? Build it into your applications? What are the available tools? And where do you start?

Our live event will help you answer these questions and get started.

Machine learning Q&A:

The Q&A below will help you better understand advanced analytics, machine learning, and the true power of data. You’ll learn what type of data you should collect, some of the tools available, and how to get started…

What is Advanced Analytics?

Advanced Analytics is the use of highly scalable architectures, statistical and machine learning models, and intelligent dashboards to provide you with meaningful insights that were out of reach until now.

Can you define what Machine Learning is in a nutshell?

Machine learning, or predictive analytics, are algorithms that identify and learn from relationships in your data to make predictions and guide your decisions.

What is Cortana Intelligence Suite?

Cortana Intelligence Suite is a fully managed big data and advanced analytics suite, which allows you to use and deliver real-time, intelligent, big data technologies and predictive analytics in the cloud.

What is IoT?

IoT or the Internet of Things is a term used to describe our growing world of connected devices. From smart phones to smart buildings, everyday things are continuously producing, sending, and receiving data that you can take advantage of today.

How does an organization start to think about data analytics?

The first step is compiling a list of business problems that your organization faces. These are generally the questions that reports and meetings are trying to answer. Once these issues are identified, predictive analytics can be used to automate decisions, or at least add confidence to your conclusions.

How do I know if I have big data?

There are conflicting definitions, but you know that you have big data when the amount (and arguably structure) of data you are trying to process becomes part of the problem. If this is the case, HDInsight or Azure Data Lake may be an ideal solution.

When should I use an IoT Hub instead of an Event Hub?

Use an Event Hub to ingest large streams of asynchronous messages, typically through HTTP, in a highly scalable and cost effective way. Use an IoT Hub when you need to register devices for bi-directional communication allowing you to set rules and transfer files. These messages are typically HTTP or MQTT.

Can you provide a real-world example of tangible solutions that you’ve delivered for a customer?

Northwest Cadence was selected by a cloud services company in the greater Seattle area to use the powerful data analytics capabilities of Cortana Analytics — to provide real time feedback on their marketing efforts, as well as improve their lead generation process.

During this engagement, Northwest Cadence helped the customer dramatically improve their existing process of generating leads. While their process was already quite innovative, Northwest Cadence leveraged Advanced Analytics to further improve their lead generation.

Through a proprietary engine, the company collected an extraordinary amount of data from targeted, accessible sources. Northwest Cadence helped combine that data with new sources of publically available data to create an engine that ranks the likelihood that companies will migration to a particular technology in the next few months. From initial analysis, this pipeline resulted in leads that were substantially more likely to result in actual conversions than the baseline lead generation effort.

What can I do to improve my reporting?

Are you using Power BI? If not, you should be. Power BI has powerful cross-filtering capabilities, real-time streaming data displays, and ad-hoc natural language query-ability. You can also share your reports across your organization with Organizational Content Packs.

“We have so much data that we’re not even looking at it – we’re just sitting on it. There appears to be substantial potential here for improving our bottom line.”

How can I tell if I have a good machine learning model?

Regression and Classification are the two most common machine learning models we see. Azure Machine Learning Studio lets you evaluate your models fairly easily. Simply look at the graph in the Evaluate Model module. For Classification models, as a basic guideline you want the line to hug the top-left of the ROC graph. For Regression models, the Coefficient of Determination (R2) is generally a good indicator. That is, the closer to 1 it is the better. For more info check out Evaluating Machine Learning Models.

Can you tell me about the type of data my business should collect?

Collect everything! There’s nothing more frustrating than coming up with a great idea or facing a challenging new problem that could be solved with data, then having to wait six months to aggregate the data you need. Take advantage of the inexpensive storage solutions Azure offers and you’ll soon start to see how many of your problems can be solved with the data you collect.
