Installing Visual Studio 2012 RTM on Windows 8 RC

Issue:

When installing and/or upgrading to Visual Studio 2012 RTM on a Windows 8 RC box, the installer may hang and inform you that you do not have .Net 4.5.x installed.

You cannot proceed until you resolve this.

Applies To:

  • Windows 8 RC (Release Candidate/Preview)
  • Visual Studio 2012 RTM

Findings:

The problem is VS 2012 is not compatible with Windows 8 RC. If you attempt to download the current version of .Net 4.5 you will see this error:

This is because .Net 4.5 is integrated with Windows 8; there does not appear to be a way to manually upgrade your .Net version.

Workaround:

The only workaround is to upgrade your Windows 8 installation to the RTM version or later.

    Yeah, I got the same errors and ended up with the same conclusion :(

    There is another workaround solution to fix this. It works for me:

    Goto Registry and navigate to below path:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREWow6432NodeMicrosoftNET Framework SetupNDPv4Full

    and change the version to 4.5.50709

    That’s it, now you can install RTM Version of Visual Studio on Windows 8 RP

    Interesting solution. I would be curious to see if changing the .Net version this way would eventually lead to different issues. Did you change it back after the install?
